Well, you certainly shouldn't buy one today -- Apple's about to release a new one in about a week. Check back then.
Otherwise, the only overriding reason to avoid them that I am familiar with is that AT&T's coverage is often awful. That may or may not be true in your neck of the woods however.
I'm in Boston, and have had AT&T for the last 6 years, and they're the best around for service -- I have found them to be much better than Sprint or T-mobile, and most of the time Verizon as well. I have lived in Somerville, North Cambridge and Watertown to base these data points on. There are some points I know my call will be dropped because I'm in between towers, but none in my house or anything.
I have an iPhone, and having a device that's just *on* the internet is nice. You can turn it into "airplane mode" if you like, if you don't want it to do data at all (I had it in airplane mode when I was in Canada).
It does cost a lot, and there's no insurance for equipment like you can get with most other phones AT&T sells.
I'm digging the idea of always there internet and having all my music portable to my car and I don't know what else yet. This is just the beginning of a thought process.
The packages for the iPhone are quite reasonable considering the data part. $110 for two phone lines. That is only $10 more per month than I am already paying with AT&T.
Reason why you should: You think you want one. Reason why you should not: You're not sure yet.
I think I might get one if I didn't already have a Treo. Given that I already have a Treo with an unlimited data plan, I have no plans to get one. But I don't know your motivations...
My motivations are varied and mostly irrational at this point. 1) I feel very behind the times technologically. My computer is almost seven years old! My phone is two! 2) I am already with AT&T and the coverage is perfectly fine where I live and I don't hate them as a company like I do Sprint. 3) Pretty! 4) Music! 5)Internet with a a decent screen. 6) Mapquest in my pocket :) 7) Movies!
I am in need of a new phone so I was looking around. Mostly, it seems like a nifty device to have that may or may not enrich my life.
