This weekend was very busy. It started on Friday when I stayed home actually sick from work, but went out to buy pieces for my faerie costume for the Maryland Faerie Festival anyway :) I purchased a cool pair of sequined slippers at Payless, 100 ft of 14g wire at Home Depot, two silver ear cuffs from Crystal Fox and two kinds of floral tape, iridescent cellophane, ribbon and cute little purple bead clusters at Michael's.
With the items from Home Depot and Michael's I made wings! Yay, wings! One day I will take a picture of them and post them for all to marvel at. They are nothing awesomely fancy, but I like them and I received many compliments on them.
On Wednesday, I received the elf ears I ordered from Aradani Costuming. I bought the small elf ears as I have very small ears. I was a wee bit disappointed with them because they are quite thick and impossible to blend on the outside, though not so hard to blend into the hairline and into the ear with gobs of flesh latex and foundation. I used the two ear cuffs to cover the transition from prosthetic to flesh and was pleased with the result.
Saturday was the festival. I was supposed to volunteer at the first aid tent from 10-2, but they sent me down to the children's crafts tables where I ended up at Glamour Glen helping kids make glitter body lotion, lip balm , treasure bags, bracelets and necklaces. I had a really good time!
There was one little boy maybe six years old, decorating a treasure bag who leaned over to me and said, "I know your secret."
Really not knowing my secret myself, I asked, "What's my secret?"
"You can take your ears off," he replied.
I nodded my head slowly and said, "Yes, I can. But why would I want to?"
His younger sister then chimed in, "She's an elf!"
"I am not! See these wings? I am a faerie!" I protested.
"Faeries don't have pointed ears," she insisted.
"Well, some faeries from the North have pointed ears. I am from the North and I am a faerie...actually, I am from California, so faeries from the West have pointed ears and darker hair...we are at a faerie festival and I am a faerie!"
At this point, the parents were doing the best they could to not be consumed with laughter. It was no where near as upseting as it was silly. Those parents need to do a better job educating their children in the ways of the fae.
When I was done with my shift I went into the staff room and looked for food. There was very little left since my break was two hours after the normal lunchtime. I made myself a very small sandwich and sat down for the first time in almost five hours. *heavy sigh* Sitting was good, the sandwich was only so-so. As I was eating my less that magical lunch, my wonderful husband walked in with two lovely ladies in tow! I was very excited to see them, but I *really* wanted to sit for a while longer. So I did. Then we walked around the festival until five. I bought a really beautiful oak leaf-shaped leather hair cup from these people Miscellaneous Oddiments. I bought Bart a plain black leather mask from someone else...I don't remember who.
When that was over we raced home to clean up, pack up and pick up a few groceries so that we could join our friends in the forest for a little camping. There was much gaming and s'morage. Yes, a good time was had by all. We left the forest a little earlier than I had hoped due to my intestinal distress. **shakes fist toward belly "Damn you, intestines!!"** And damn me for forgetting to bring some black tea which would have helped significantly with the rowdy intestines.
