I am so irritated with this place! Nothing works right! I am currently attempting to open a program that will open in everybody else's account on this damn computer, but mine. It is crappy software anyway, but is the only DNA aligning tool we have!!!! Not that I need it all of the time because my DNA sequencing reaction don't work most of the time either. There are holes in the wall of thecell culture rroom and very dificult to keep things clean. Sterile is not even an option. The air conditioner in lab is broken and has been for about three weeks, so we have the windows open. Dust and leaves and crap blow into the lab constantly. Every day when I come in I must wipe off my desk before using it because the dust is so deep. SIGH Right now, I so wanna go home. Why did I drag my new husband to another country again? I must be insane. Do I really need a PhD? Even If I do get one from here, I can't get anybody in the states to tell me if it would be accepted in the US. There was no question when Hopkins was involved, but now that they are not, who know's? Baltimore sure is lovely this time of year. (refer back to my "insane" comment earlier) Yes, we may be back in town by January first. Of course, if we do come back, it will probably be to a winter that was worse than the one I moved into in 2001. Worst winter in 100 years or something like that. When we got to Naples, it was the worst winter in 15 years. Ack. Ack. Ack. And since when did I decide that Baltimore is home and not California?

AWWWW! I totally understand your frustration.

Currently at this time, Donovan's company lost the bid for the job here in Naples. So by next month we could be anywhere else but here or have switched companies and started all over. Life if funny that way I guess. I think life is teaching me patience and acceptance of any situation. I learned a lot living here for the past year and half and if I do end up leaving here it wouldnt be a loss. Even with all the frustrations of this culture there is so much beauty way beyond all that. I love that italians arent ever in a rush (unless of course they are driving). They take leisurely strolls through town (of course getting in the way of us "always in a hurry" tourists and expats). I love so many things about this culture yet part of me is happy about this change because it means a new culture to figure out, a new culture to explore.
Sorry, I guess this is my rant since I have YET to update my dang journal.
Having said all that, yes its aggravating and annoying but you have grown so much living here the last 8 months. Both of you have. You had to rely on each other during the first year of your marriage and that is the most important thing. Youve grown together in a culture where you didnt understand the customs, the language, or the procedures and because of that you both have a stronger understanding of each other and your relationship. Even if you do leave, I'm blessed that I was able to get to know both of you. You were a stronghold for me during turbulent times. You did more for me than I will ever know or ever fully apprieciate. I thank the earth for sending you here if only for me, being as selfish as it may.

I agree that it is beautiful here and I would really rather not leave, but I am just not sure that I can take the strain. Everyday it is something else. Of course, everything may work out fine in the end. Who knows. I'm sorry about Dono's company not winning the bid. You guys have been so very wonderful to us since the day we got here. Actually, since even before we got here. Thank you for everything.

Wish there was something I could do to help ya. Didn't you check out that place before you decided to go there? :\ *sigh*
Maybe you need a nice break to London, where free tarts and cakes are plentiful! :)

Sure I checked it out first. I even came over for a week to meet with people and tour the labs. The thing is, I am not in the lab I was promised, which was brand new and well funded. I am not with the professor I was promised. I am not making the stipend I was promised. The lab I am in isn't even in the Biological Tower that I was shown and I never met the man who's lab I am in. The building and the equipment are ancient. I'm feeling like this was a nicely orchestrated bait-and-switch scheme for Vecchio to save his program.

wow, if you were in the states, you could sue them for false advertising. I could see you on Judge Judy or something. ;)
These kind of things seem quite common in Europe, from what I've heard about Aritz's and BK's experiences. They don't seem as organized. You really have to be careful about the degree they give you and how it will be represented at home.
Aritz got his education at a German University and then came here to the UK, only to have to redo some things to get the "real" qualification.

Well, see, if you move back in winter, just come live with us for a few months. There's apparently a huge lab down here that Sharon was looking at just like the bender lab...but with less...umm...girl power? ;) (atleast I would assume, since nothing can have that much)

*hugs* Just take a deep breath, go outside, look around, and remember that you're in Italy. Make what you can out of school, and enjoy the rest. :)

And I'm sure Bart will support me on this. You didn't drag him...he followed you willingly and happily like the good little cute puppy he is. ;)

It would be great if we could come visit you for a week or two when we get back...whenever that is. :)
I certainly don't regret this experience, I just wish I had been better prepared, which I most certainly was not. Neither was Bart, but yes, he was very willing. Aside from the crap in the lab, we have had a wonderful time so far. We have met fabulous people and seen magnificent things. There are five castles in this city for Pete's sake! There really is a ton to do here. We haven't even made it to a strip club yet!

That stinks! (or is that my pigs??)

I feel really sorry for you both about this. I know how excited you were to do this. I know everyone keeps saying it- but-WOW- you got to LIVE in Italy for a year- Not a lot of people I know would have that experience!! Just think of it as a really, really, okay really, REALLY long honeymoon!
